Walima invitation wording: examples for cards and WhatsApp
Updated 2026-10-15
The Walima is the wedding feast hosted after the Nikah, traditionally by the groom's family, to share the joy of the marriage with relatives and friends. Its invitation is a little different from the Nikah card: the marriage has already happened, so the tone is thankful and celebratory. Below are examples you can copy and adjust, plus a few etiquette tips.
What to include on a Walima card
- An opening line: Bismillah, or a short thanks such as “Alhamdulillah”.
- The hosts: usually the groom's parents.
- The couple's names, often with “son of” and “daughter of” lines.
- The event: “Walima dinner”, “Walima reception” or “Dawat-e-Walima”.
- Day, date and time, written clearly with AM/PM.
- Venue, with the full location pin sent separately on WhatsApp.
- A dua for the couple and an RSVP contact.

Duas and lines to add
- بَارَكَ اللَّهُ لَكُمَا وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكُمَا وَجَمَعَ بَيْنَكُمَا فِي خَيْرٍ – May Allah bless you both, shower blessings upon you, and unite you in goodness.
- Alhamdulillah – All praise is for Allah. A natural opening for a Walima, since the Nikah is complete.
- JazakAllahu khairan – May Allah reward you with good. A kind closing line, or for thank-you cards after the event.
Etiquette tips
- Send it in time. For guests travelling from other cities, send the Walima invite with the Nikah invite, 3–4 weeks before. A reminder message two days before helps.
- Match the design. A Walima card in the same design as the Nikah card looks thoughtful and is easy for guests to recognise in a busy WhatsApp chat.
- Keep the card short. Put the dress code, parking details or menu notes in the WhatsApp message, not on the image.
- Mention segregated seating or separate entrances on the card if your venue has them, so guests know what to expect.

Questions
Who sends the Walima invitation?
Traditionally the groom's family hosts the Walima, so the invitation usually comes from the groom's parents. Many couples now send it in both families' names or their own.
When is the Walima held?
Usually after the Nikah, often the same day or one or two days later, once the marriage has been completed. Families follow their own custom.
What dua can I write on a Walima card?
A common choice is 'Barakallahu lakuma wa baraka alaikuma wa jama'a bainakuma fi khair' – May Allah bless you both, shower blessings upon you, and unite you in goodness.
Can I send a Walima invitation on WhatsApp?
Yes. Most families now send a phone-size e-invite (1080 × 1920) on WhatsApp, followed by the location pin and a short personal message.
